It’s that time of year again! Christmas is just around the corner, and the end of 2023 is in sight.

 However, before we say goodbye to 2023 and ring in 2024, we have to prepare for the holiday season. The holidays are a busy time for everyone, and it can be overwhelming to plan your social media posts for your business in addition to the laundry list of things you already have to worry about. But have no fear, today’s article focuses on how to employ a successful social media marketing strategy this holiday season.

What?! The Holidays Are a Good Time to Post on Social Media?

As shocking as it may seem, the holidays are a great time to post on social media. Why? Many business owners, large and small, use their online platforms to promote holiday deals and offer freebies. Another way they may draw attention to their sites is by paying for ads on platforms like YouTube to promote their ads on users’ videos.

  Social media posts leading up to and during the holidays are beneficial because people have more time on their hands to look at and engage with what they’re seeing on social media. Instead of just taking a quick look, users can give the content their full attention.

Stand Out From The Crowd

 Contrary to what we may have been told when we were kids, standing out is a good thing! If you’re always trying to blend in with everyone else, you’ll never stand out. Standing out is the BEST way to cut through the clutter and make some noise with your content on social media. It’s always better to stand out instead of blending in, in every aspect of your life, and that’s especially true for those of us who work in the influencer marketing world.

 The holidays are a time when we see a lot of repetitive clutter that is similar, if not completely identical in messaging. To stand out from your competitors, get together with your team and brainstorm some ways to present the information in a unique way that is original but still gets the point across.

  If we may offer a word of advice: don’t just post “Merry Christmas” on Instagram and call it a day. You need to still be intentional about reaching your target audience. Involve them by setting up a poll on your company’s social media platforms and ask them this: What would THEY be interested in over the holidays? When we involve our audience and take their interests and opinions into consideration, that is what keeps them coming back for more, and also makes them feel like they matter. By listening to your audience, you are validating their voices and sending the message that you’re listening.

 Engaging with your audience is only one part of it, however. The next step to a successful holiday social media marketing strategy is the use of giveaways. In the next section, we’ll take a look at how giveaways help your marketing strategy and some examples of giveaways that can be found during the holidays.

Gift giving

Giveaways, Giveaways, Giveaways Galore!

 Who doesn’t love some good giveaways? We sure do! Giveaways are great over the holidays because they boost your following and increase engagement with your business and the social media platforms attached to your business. Giveaways are used as marketing deals by influencers and big brands alike.

   How do I do a holiday giveaway for my business, you ask? First, select a valuable item that will be the main focus of the giveaway. Depending on what your business is, this might be a chance to win a gift basket full of your most popular items or a spending spree at your store location. Who doesn’t love some good retail therapy now and then?!

  Once you’ve chosen your giveaway, announce it on your social media channels and encourage your followers to share the deal on their accounts too! To enter the contest, they have to like the post and follow you, of course! It’s a great way to build your following and drive engagement quickly.

   Here are some examples of giveaways used in social media contests:

  1. Notepads, notebooks, pens: Indigo Chapters is infamous for giving these away, in addition to other merchandise like throw blankets, pillows, travel mugs, coffee cups, and baby items, just to name a few.
  2. Gift cards: We all have those people in our lives who, no matter how much we love them, are notoriously hard to buy for. This is where gift cards come in, and it’s a lifesaver on both sides because by gifting them a gift card, you’re ensuring that they’ll get something they want, while they don’t have to worry about offending you if they don’t like your gift. Win-win! A gift card to their favourite restaurant or clothing store is always a great gift!
  3. Jewelry: There are so many great jewelry pieces out there, from big names like Harry Winston, Peoples, and Cartier to small businesses like Bryan Anthony’s and Made by Mary.
  4. Makeup/Cosmetics: Makeup companies like Sephora and e.l.f. (Eyes, Lips, Face) offer giveaways such as buy one, get one free, or offering to deduct money from a person’s first order, both online and in-store.
  5. Clothing: Clothing brands like Bootlegger, Dynamite, and others all offer deals during Black Friday (just in time for Christmas), but also offer giveaways like a $1,000 shopping spree or a $500 gift card.

Giveaways take some of the holiday stress off, but it’s also important to connect with your audience on a more personal level. How? By showing an interest in them as human beings, and encouraging them to look after their mental health during the holidays.

Encouraging Good Mental Health This Holiday Season

 If it makes sense for your brand, encourage your audience to look after their mental health during the holidays.

  Christmas is something that we prepare for year-round, and the amount of preparation and stress leading up to the big day (kind of like a wedding!) can cause burnout. Ugh! Burnout is never fun at any time of the year, but during the holiday season, it can hit hard. Just when you check one thing off your holiday to-do list, it’s time to move on to the next thing.

  Remind yourself, your team and your audience that it’s important to build in time for self-care during the busy holiday season so that you all have the energy to enjoy the holiday parties, dinners and festivities with family and friends instead of wanting to crawl into a hole and not come out until after Christmas. We’ve all been there!

  How should you encourage yourself and those around you to maintain good mental health during the craziness of December? Record and post a video of yourself encouraging your audience to make time for physical movement; this could be a walk, dance class, yoga, or meeting with a friend for coffee or lunch.

   This kind of support and emotional connection will show your audience that you not only value them as consumers of your products and services but also that you care about them as human beings. They’re supporting your business and livelihood, give back by showing how much you care.

Emotional Connection

 Having an emotional connection with someone goes a lot deeper than expressing genuine care and concern, it means being vulnerable too. We’re not saying you have to spill your whole life story in an Instagram or YouTube video, but sharing something like a favourite Christmas memory, from the past or recent years, can do a lot for you and your business because you’re giving people a chance to see who you are as a person.

  In addition to sharing your favourite Christmas memories, encourage your audience to share theirs. Here’s an example of a caption to go with your video:

  “I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about my favourite Christmas memory, now I want to hear about yours!

  1.     What’s your favourite thing to cook/eat during the holidays?
  2.     What are some of your family’s Christmas traditions?
  3.     Do you still have a favourite Christmas gift that you received as a child in your possession now as an adult? What is it?
  4.     What’s your favourite Christmas song?

These are just some of the questions you can include with your video that express genuine interest. Another thing you can do is have a team meeting and ask your coworkers to share a video of themselves with a cherished Christmas memory being the main focus or answer one of the questions above. Encourage them to share the video not only on the company’s social media channels but on their accounts as well. An example of a video caption for your account might look like this:

  “At (company name), we’re gearing up for the holiday season by asking our team members and customers to share their favourite Christmas memories, from everything to childhood memories, holiday traditions and beloved Christmas carols to their favourite dishes on the Christmas dinner table. Help us spread a little love and good cheer this holiday season with a story about your favourite Christmas memory.”
